Security camera descriptions and search with Frigate GenAI
What they built
Frigate, the open-source NVR, can hand camera snapshots and frame sequences to a generative AI provider. That gives you object descriptions, review summaries, semantic search embeddings and chat.
Local providers (llama.cpp, Ollama) keep all processing on your own hardware.
Setup
- Provider: ollama or llamacpp (llama.cpp also supports transcription)
- Recommended vision models: qwen3-vl (frames), qwen3.6/qwen3.8, gemma4 (annotated_frames)
- Roles per provider: descriptions, chat, embeddings, transcribe
Gotchas
- The docs warn that running GenAI on CPU is impractical because of inference times
- Embeddings need a multimodal embedding model; a chat model returns vectors that silently give poor search
“Local providers run on your own hardware and keep all data processing private.”— Frigate docs
Do it yourself
- Run Ollama on a GPU machine and pull qwen3-vl:4b
- Add a genai provider block to the Frigate config
- Assign roles (descriptions, chat, embeddings) as needed
- Enable descriptions per camera for the objects you care about

Home Assistant Voice PE with a local LLM instead of Echo
A $60 Voice Preview Edition, an N100 box and an optional RTX 3060 replace every Echo and Nest in the house. It keeps working with the internet unplugged.
Fully local Home Assistant voice assistant on a GPU
Wake word to spoken answer in 2-3 seconds, with zero audio leaving the house. Built from faster-whisper, Piper and Ollama, with a cloud fallback.
Replacing Google Nest Minis with local Assist on llama.cpp
After a year of Nest Minis getting dumber, a household moved to fully local Assist. Higher-quant GGUF models from Hugging Face are what finally fixed tool calling.
Mac Studio as an always-on, LLM-driven smart-home brain
Phrases like 'it's stuffy in here' become real device calls, run by Ollama with qwen3:14b on a Mac Studio. €15 ESP32 satellites keep all audio on the LAN.
